Description

Under general supervision, performs a variety of heavy, physical work in the maintenance and repair of streets, storm drains, sidewalks and related facilities.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Street Maintenance Worker I is the entry level class in this series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of duties in street maintenance, concrete work, and traffic painting and signing work. This class is alternately staffed with Street Maintenance Worker II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating pro­ficiency which meet the qualifications of the higher level class.

Street Maintenance Worker II is the journey level class in this series. Incumbents perform the full range of street maintenance duties. This class is distinguished from Senior Street Maintenance Worker in that the latter has lead responsibility for street and related maintenance work.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Positions in this classification typically perform a range of duties at a level of complexity represented by the following types of responsibilities:

  • Breaks and removes surfaces; digs, shovels, hauls, loads and unloads soils, sand, asphalt mixes and other materials; spreads, shovels, rakes, floats and rolls asphalt; repairs potholes; picks up debris and cleans streets; cleans storm drains; clears brush from catch basins, storm drains and flood channels; sprays herbicides for weed control; performs landscape and grounds maintenance duties in parks and recreation areas.

  • Mixes, pours and finishes concrete sidewalks, curbs, gutters and driveways; repairs private property damaged in the course of the work; drives heavy trucks to pick up and deliver materials.

  • Paints traffic control markings and stencils on pavements and curbs using spray equip­ment and brushes; installs and maintains traffic and other signs according to established standards; reads and interprets maps, manuals and specifications; operates and maintains a variety of hand and power tools, test equipment and other equipment related to the work; operates light and heavy trucks, tractors and construction equipment used in the work.

  • Uses appropriate safety equipment and observes safe work methods and safety practices related to the work; cones and flags worksites to secure from traffic; observes safe driving prac­tices; washes and cleans assigned vehicles.

  • Completes basic records related to work performed; may train and direct the work of others; may act in a lead capacity on specific jobs; responds to emergency situations in off-hours as required; maintains work area in a clean and orderly condition; assists other divisions in maintenance and custodial activities as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Application of:

Techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of streets, traffic signing, and painting and concrete work

Operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment common to the field

Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work

Codes and regulations related to the work

Shop mathematics

Ability to Perform and Successfully Apply Skill In:

Operating and maintaining a variety of hand and power tools and equipment used in the work

Understanding and following oral and written instructions

Properly placing cones, barricades and warning devices and directing traffic flow at job sites

Performing heavy physical labor

Exercising independent judgment and initiative without close supervision

Reading and interpreting maps, manuals and specifications

Physical and Environmental Demands

Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 90 pounds and to perform sustained heavy physi­cal labor.

Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions and to work with exposure to traffic.

Must be willing to work overtime and off-hours shifts in emergency situations.

Training and Experience

Any combination of training and experience that provides the above listed knowledge, skills and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way of qualifying would be:

Street Maintenance Worker I: Ability to read and write at a level necessary for efficient job performance and six months of work experience as a laborer in construction or main­tenance work; possession of a valid California Class C driver's license.

Street Maintenance Worker II: Ability to read and write at a level necessary for efficient job performance and two years of experience in street maintenance, concrete work, and traffic painting and signing work at a level equivalent to the City's Street Maintenance Worker I class; possession of a valid California Class A driver's license.
